I appreciate this puzzle more in retrospect.

I noticed some things that were strange but not enough to mean anything. The parts finally settled into place.

I loved how the more subtle pieces fit in.

No Mikeys (or others) left behind!

There are nine important Across entries -- they are fairly symmetrically placed in the grid -- until we reach the bottom third of the grid when that doesn't hold up completely.

And the answer happens to be nine letters in length.

The relevant entries do not include the four longest ones.

There's a certain duality about the important entries.

Here's the Halloween costume in question.

Nine words in the grid actually contained two words, and both were hinted at in the clues for the entries. Taking the letter that the two words do not have in common leaves us with --
