Duck Out

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Duck Out

Happy Sunday, Muggles!

As I hope you are all aware by now, we've got a "new kid on the block" here on the forum! Phil (@pchow13) is serving up delightful biweekly metas over on his own channel, "Phil's Crossword Corner", and it looks like he's just finished adding his catalog of older puzzles. If you're not one of his solvers already, what are you waiting for? Go give Phil a follow!

I reached out to Phil a couple weeks ago to see if he'd like to write something together, and this puzzle is the result of that connection. Phil told me this is his first ever crossword constructing collab, but I'm certain it won't be his last! Anyways, onto the puzzle, the answer to which is something you might duck out of.

Thank you to @Cap'n Rick for keeping the SSS running smoothly (pun intended!), to @Joe Ross for the tech help, and to @Abide, @FrankieHeck, and Christina Bodensiek for test solving and feedback.

Please submit your answers on Crosshare or PM one of us. Nudges forthcoming today at noon, and the answer will be revealed on Saturday. Happy solving!

Sssolved! Well done on a fun collab, too. :D
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Fun and cute and not painfully (but playfully) obvious.
I guess I should change my signature, and start promoting this meta: Hungry Little Creature. I was going to sent it to people for testing but I dropped the ball on it.

Thanks everyone for the kind words so far! How about some noonday nudges:

1. Huh, I could have sworn there were some ducks around here somewhere! Looks like they all ducked out.
2. You'll need to put four ducks back in their proper place.
3. Gee, these ducky entries all "pair" nicely with another clue!
4. Sure enough, we're doing alternate entries again. Mr. G is your friend, in case some of these aren't familiar.

Solved without nudges. Just the right difficulty level for an SSS, and fun mechanism. Super jealous of the 41D clue.
Thanks. :)
