The WSJ variety cryptic is out and constructed by Trip Payne, a veteran of the genre. Heres the link:

Fun puzzle and I thought very well done, although I had one small gripe about its' structure.

All done. Fun one - not too tough. I like the different constructors each month.

Fun indeed!
I haven’t seen Trip Payne’s name on a variety cryptic in some years. Where has he been? Or have I simply been puzzling in other places?

Last few have been almost total bomb-outs for me
Haven’t decided if I’ll even attempt this
I don’t think the goal of a puzzle should be that almost no one can do it
But that could in this company just be me

I'm pretty sure my first encounter with Trip Payne's name was in the early 1980s as the winner of some GAMES Magazine contest.ChrisKochmanski wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 7:39 pm Fun indeed!

Just got my last piece done (1A) with assistance from a crossword helper to give me the four words that have the pattern ABCxDx. And now I see how it fits the clue.

Fun one from Trip, didn't take too long. (Though the last word of the unclued answer is not properly pronounced that way.)
