New Beginnings

Ahoy Muggle Mateys! Welcome to my very first meta! I’ve been enjoying solving for the past year and half, and now that I’m retired, I thought I’d try my hand at constructing. I’m very honored to have this opportunity to debut my puzzle on Muggle Meta Monday, and I’d like to thank Peter Abide (@Abide), Al Sisti (@Al Sisti), and Will Pfadenhauer (@AnswerPfinder) for their encouraging analyses, comments, and suggestions. I'd also like to thank @boharr for all of his pre-testing help and Joe Ross (@Joe Ross) for all of his technical help.

The puzzle title, appropriately, is “New Beginnings”, and hopefully I’ll be able to contribute more metas in the future.

The meta answer is a two-word place name.

Difficulty: This is the hardest puzzle I’ve published to date (but it’s also the easiest) 😊

New Beginnings on Crosshare

If needed, I’ll post nudges on Wednesday once I figure out how to do that! (Still getting my sea legs!)

Nudges are here.
Solution is here.

Good luck!

Excellent puzzle -- what fun! Thank you, Rick. (I did have to backsolve for one letter.)
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

There was one element that made me go "Huh?" But googling did demonstrate that piece to be factually correct, if not well known or readily apparent.

But yes, awesome debut!

"Aye Captain, I'm giving it everything I got" - he said in an engineered manner.

Nice job Rick, I looked for the easy and it wasn't there, had to look some more. GREAT debut!

Who knew they had Polish snowboarders!

Confirmed on Crosshare so couchless it is.

Should we refer to Dr. Tom as a "groan man"?

Great job Rick! I was going to say that that was a great job for a new constructor, but that would have been a great job for a seasoned constructor. Tight puzzle that was fun and challenging and just darn good.

I never liked that couch anyway.

Good one, Cap’n! Just pleasure-sailing these days, are you? Congrats on your retirement — and your debut MMM!

Off the couch! Excellent debut puzzle, Rick.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Off the couch. A perfect beginning for the week... and from a new meta constructor, too.
Thanks, Rick! Hope to see more from you. ;)

Nice puzzle! I enjoyed filling the grid, and that left me favorably disposed to look for the meta.

I’m off the couch
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)
