Off the couch.
I normally tend to overcomplicate when solving metas and I’m trying to avoid doing that, but I tried a little too hard on this one because I totally oversimplified it.
Thank you Cap’n Rick!

Nudged off the couch. This is a very good grid and meta. Keep up the good work, Cap'n Rick.

Aye Aye Cap'n permission to leave the couch...

Wonderful puzzle by Cap'n Rick, and this is only his 2nd. At this rate he'll have his own column in WSJ in a few months.

Delightfully tricky and straightforward at the same time, striking at everyone's Achilles' heel like that. Impressive idea and construction. Oh, and I think we both should get props from the American Coffee Council for our tireless use of Arabica beans. Tell you what, I'll be Juan Valdez and you can be Tuo Valdez,

What a punning cartoon! Who would have expected it, hope you aren't board....

Off the couch...
After a couple rabbit holes, I finally saw the second step. Very nice, Cap'n Rick. Looking forward to your next one!

Oh, hello @Joe Ross. It's great to see @DrTom off the couch, isn't it?

You know what they call a couch with an outboard motor attached?

This was fun... A couple of missteps along the way but we eventually got there! Thanks so much for the great puzzle.

I read somewhere that Jeopardy! writers always try to place the daily doubles behind a clue where you need to take two steps to get to the answer. Similar situation here: I got the first step, and I'm still chewing on it in the midnight hour. (I'd make a pun but worried I may give something away, though I think everyone reading this might be off the couch.) Wish me luck!

I'm off the couch, sort of, since my third hare-brained guess was somehow correct.

Okay, second nudge then gets the mechanism. Loved this one - that was brilliant!!

LMAO! Joe went a little outboard but the Cap'n went overboard. I don't know what propelled him to do that but his picture was divan and I not only want to sit there I'd love a seat on an occasional piece of motorized furniture.

Your jokes are as good as your puzzles Cap'n, and that's pretty good.

Alice looking into rabbit hole smaller.jpg

Ahoy Muggles!

The meta answer is "ALICE", and a whopping 52 of you got it right!

As the title suggests, the first step involved searching for "warrens", otherwise known as "rabbit holes", or in this case rabbits and bunnies with "holes" in their names. The symmetrically-placed grid entries were:

CAD*BURY
FLO*PSY
RICO*CHET
HAR*VEY
JESS*ICA

Warren toons.JPG

The 2nd step involved finding alternate clues that could also apply to the rabbits and bunnies.

CADBURY - 42A They produce eggs - IBISES
FLOPSY - 24A Like a ragdoll - LIMP
RICOCHET - 52A Rebound - ECHO
HARVEY - 48D TV funny man Steve - CARELL
JESSICA - 8A Singer Simpson - ASHLEE

Arranging these alternate answers in grid order and selecting the first letters of each results in "ALICE" - a character who certainly had some experience with rabbit holes.
Answer Grid.JPG
As a funny coincidence, the day after I asked @boharr to pretest this puzzle back in January, @whimsy released her MEOW #58 meta - "Corner Count Off". The answer to her puzzle, of course, .."Rabbit Hole".

Thanks everyone for solving!

Smooth sailing!
