Okay... 12 hours after submitting the correct answer I finally see the mechanism. Let me disagree with everyone else and state I found this very challenging.
I guess I should change my signature, and start promoting this meta: Hungry Little Creature. I was going to sent it to people for testing but I dropped the ball on it.

Off the couch.
I need to read the rules better. First submission was the question and answer. 2nd submission was just the answer.

Thanks fun grid and meta.

Off the couch (thank goodness, I've been there all day watching TV and eating/drinking!). Got the answer but now I have to go back and see why. I know its there because I know the Cap'n, but I grokked it without knowing why.

Had a heck of a time with "Pie Nut" because I kept reading it "PINE" nut and could not figure out how to fit that in.

Off the couch! Did the grid yesterday, then went outside to pick my blueberries. First time I've harvested enough to make a blueberry pie, so now you know what I did on my 4th of July afternoon. Sat down with coffee this morning to look at the meta and there was the answer! Thinking about having a piece of that pie for breakfast. . . Thanks, Rick!!

Jumped the gun yesterday but confident today that I am off the couch. Fun and clever meta. What more could you want?

With folks talking about there being a mechanism, I took another look today (after submitting yesterday) and in about 30 seconds I spotted it. Very apropos. Amazing what a fresh look sometimes can yield. Thanks.
