MEOW #102: Initial Impression

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

“Bye, bye, bag,” said the cat.

Ok, then I’ll stop fission around, I don’t want to add alternative fuel to the fire…(we got a Hunter X thing going on here!)

I see a good candidate for step 1, but when I try the obvious choices for step 2, I get gibberish. Trying to leap to the end and guess the meta answer didn't work either.

Off the couch. I managed to make this difficult for myself. I thought I had already tried the correct mechanism but apparently not because there it was.

Saturday Nudges...YAY!

Ordered in gradations of "spoilerness"

In a departure from my usual chaos, the 5 things you need to find are symmetrical!

Look through the GRID, do you see any items that ring a historical bell?

I have included a nudge clue that points you to the mechanism in the puzzle

It is a clue that when you saw it I am sure some part of you said. "Why did he write it that way?". Well now you know

LOL solved after the first nudge but didn't realize it until later. I was like 'oh, I guess this isn't the mechanism, but it would be kind of a cool one'

Came back later and...that was the mechanism.
