"Permanent Wave" by Abide

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Your Sunday afternoon nudges

Three across entries (3,17,19) are missing letters at their edges.

Find those letters to spell a six letter word.

Google that word with “1966 movie”

The site is just a web page, a meeting place, a clubhouse - it's the group that's special.

Hi, y’all.

I got Peter’s Permanent Wave pre- nudge. But it’s hard to see the one in my hair cause of those clothes dryer sheets pinned to my hat. Keeps the mosquitoes away, as advertised.

Sssolved without nudges, and ssso glad to hear the SSS will continue! Especially appreciative of a good Sunday puzzle when Gaffney is on week 1 or 2 so I’m out of challenges by Friday evening, AND the Sunday WSJ special puzzle is not one I enjoy.

So much fun stuff going on in this puzzle! Was able to do the grid without googling (helped that the two schools are both undergrad alma maters in our family), but couldn’t guess the themer without googling since I am just a bit too young to have 1966 films in my working memory (I was four). Learned on Crosshare (after the fact) about the reason for the color graphics and looked that up … brilliant!

Thanks for the fun!
The other Wendy.
