"On Air" by pair-o-ducks

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Good morning, muggles, it's me, schmidzy, back with another pairoducksical puzzle! I had a lot of fun brainstorming ideas for this puzzle, and I hope you enjoy solving it, too. I'll be on the road today (it's a beautiful weekend to hike the Red River Gorge!), but I'll do my best to respond to each one of you as soon as I can.

Thanks go out to @Abide and @Wendy Walker for their expert test-solving and advising, and to @Joe Ross for his technical wizardry.

Happy Solving!

My favorite thing about the SSS is you don't have to suffer too long without nudges! With that in mind:

Those four long two-word entries have got to be important.

66A tells you which half of the themers to use.

My brother and I used to play a word game (and maybe you have too) that we called "triplets." Here's an example: muscle, dial, deaf. Answer:tone Or: house, elephant, snow. Answer: white

You're looking for a word that goes with the first half of each themer. The title should help if you're still stuck.

If you've got the word but can't get the rest of the band name, think what's another word for the first part of something? (Hint: the clue for 66A was a little on the nose.)

NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

SSSolved! But I needed all of the nudges!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

SSSolved -- no nudges, just late to the game. Thanks, schmidzy!

Oh, and just to prove I'd never hurt a duck, here are a couple I rescued from a construction site with new houses going in at the end of our road. Found them in some rubble about six months ago, placed them safely in the decorative entrance to the development (much ritzier than our street!) and, surprisingly, there they remain, like little mini-mansion mascots.
