This week's WSJ contest is titled
OF SOUND CHARACTER by Matt Gaffney
The answer to this week’s contest crossword is

A reminder - the WSJ will not be published on Monday Jan 1 however the contest closes at midnight on Sunday as usual
Our Friday and Saturday reports will come out at noon however the Sunday report will not come out at noon. It will be either very early, very late, Monday sometime or never.
And the Sunday last call zoom session has been cancelled due to expected revelry.

You may have noticed my avatar updates weekly (after the reveal) with an image that indicates both the weekly WSJCC answer and either the number of consecutive weeks I've solved or my failure to solve. I've put together a collage of all of my 2023 avatars and will post on this thread after the reveal for anyone interested in a trip down memory lane. In hindsight, some of these avatars are pretty lame, a couple are kind of clever but most fall somewhere in between.

Ashore! Nice puzzle. I took one little detour, totally my fault, then had an AHA! moment, or maybe a DUH! one.
Great fun, brilliant mechanism.
