Hah! You’re right—finally got it right after I posted. I had been going down the right path but veered off as I often do. Thanks for the encouragement.

Onshore!
To tame the mighty meta all Muggles are intent,
In twenty-minutes-or-so, the super-solvers their answers have already sent.
For many, like me, the Aha! moment is much more elusive,
Like panning for gold in a mud and rock slurry in a sieve.
But we press on like a flock of chickens,
Pecking at the clues as each pulse quickens,
There it is! There it is! Hooray!
Or is it? We'll find out for sure on Monday.

Yet another neat trick up Patrick’s sleeve.

Before I head to shore Isaac is going to help me plant a hops vine (called bine) in the stern garden. Ever the DIY entrepreneur, he was intrigued by the idea. Some weeks are slow in his bar we know, so he can brew up something new for us.
My own is just recreational hops- they make interesting dried arrangements

Note the ever growing woodpile created by the resident Paul Bunyan. This is northern Maine, so that kitchen wood fire feels good this 27 degree morning.🍻
I can't handle cold mornings anymore. Grew up in the snow belt of VT. Fall to me means raking leaves, lots of tourist traffic and cold, dusty breezes. I actually don't mind frigid so much, so I'd rather be gone in the fall, but family matters make it that i have to endure being away for the winter (horrible problem, I know). Northern Maine joke: Q: What is the English translation of the Native American name Madawaska? A: "Occupied Canada"

On shore. At least what I have makes sense. Does anyone else have an issue with one part of the meta solution?

I think if you get the right solution, it's a lock.

Finally ashore. Isaac is getting a little tired of my overactive mind.
So many [edited] coincidences--but not even halfway there.
The AHA was 500%.
I agree this is an excellent prototype meta, but given that, I should have seen it sooner!
I did re-fill the grid in the newspaper copy today, which helped.

A new tool to a view gave an immediate A-HA! No magic, mere coincidence, yet fun none-the-less. Details in 17+.

On shore. Once one gets the answer it seems pretty straightforward, but I spent a lot of time wandering in the wilderness

Still lost at sea! I was frustrated yesterday to see everyone's confident solves and a 1-star rating. Feeling a little more company this morning now that the rating has creeped up to 2.5 stars and us stragglers are checking in.

Hoping I have an epiphany sometime today!
