Always a pleasure to sssolve a Schmeel puzzle!
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.
(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Note to self - when you read a nudge Tom actually read ALL of the nudge and save yourself about 40 minutes trying to force it to be something it is not.
Sailed into port though with this very nice, and VERY well constructed, puzzle.

NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

This is me trying to solve it! No epiphanies yet! I'm intrigued, though.

It's Saturday - time for the reveal:
PENGUIN
PENANCE
PENDANT
PENNANT
PENDING
There are clues for other entries in the puzzle that would be appropriate for those words. The entries are:
AUK - [Diving bird]
MASS - [Religious rite]
EAVE - [It hangs]
SEMI - [Big game] (I know. The clue here could have been better - maybe it should have been [Tournament hurdle], or something like that.)
NEAR - [Looming]
The initials of those words in grid order are NAMES, which, if also preceded by PEN provides the answer - PEN NAMES, which some writers use.
Thanks to the solvers who made their way through all of that!

Because I'm an iconoclast, even though I missed the deadline, I will still try solving this! (I did not peek, I promise.) Absolutely nothing yet, so nudges might be in order.
Edit: Second nudge got me home!
