WaPo Meta by Evan Birnholz: STATE OF THE ART

I do Evan’s puzzles religiously. I enjoy the regular crosswords but especially like the occasional meta. This one is slightly more difficult than is typical, but should still be pretty easy for the pros on this board. Extremely well done and a lot of fun—thanks Evan!

I enjoyed it a lot! One of my recurring meta-solving blind spots had me looking in the wrong direction for a good few minutes, but it was a great solve once I figured it out. You'd think I'd have learned by now.
Thanks for the heads-up @oldjudge, and thanks @ebirnholz for the puzzle!

Evan's puzzles, even when difficult, are maximally solver-friendly. You just feel the generosity.

Geez, what is with all the songs this week.

But okay, I'll give it a go.
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

This was fun and easy and stress free (although kind of a hard grid). I feel weird reading the WaPo comments of people saying "I'd never have solved the meta" though.

I got this one with a nudge.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Finally got around to doing this one, glad I did - lots of fun
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!
