MEOW #114: The Sign of Four

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

Phew! Needed plenty of post-nudge staring but finally got this. Not so elementary, my dear Watson… Thanks for stretching my brain, Josh!

The MMM editors (cc: @Al Sisti ) reject your assertion that this puzzle was rejected by MMM. Looking through my email, you sent this fine puzzle to us on July 26, 2022. We both approved that day, but unfortunately it was never placed on the schedule. That was the time period you also took your sabbatical, so we never got a follow-up reminder or had any further email discussions. Nevertheless, please accept our apologies. We hope you will not hold our oversight against us in the future. ;)

@Abide I'll have my lawyer sue your lawyer!

Jk, sorry for the misunderstanding. Emails are confusing.

Finally released the cat at the 11th hour (pending confirmation). Nudge #1 was definitely spot-on.

The answer was AQUARIUS, the initial letters of all four-letter words.

Told you it was simple :)

I don't understand 55A: Hopefully you break it; Answer: toenail.
And 54D: 18 perhaps; Answer: Sib.
Can somebody help me, please!

Josh explained what that was about here: viewtopic.php?t=2046#p119288
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

IIRC 18 referred to clue number 18 which was BRO or something
