Same - I normally do the grid online first and then print it and hand fill it to work on the meta. After waiting about 90 minutes - I finally just printed the grid and hand solved.

What does Al do when he's not solving metas? He writes them! Check out his latest right here:Richard wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 5:14 pm I do the grid on line and when I finished I got congratulated for solving the puzzle.
I also get the meta. Will have an IPA later. Good meta imho.
I was going to ask Al Sisti what he does the rest of the day and week end after solving the metas so fast and then I saw the path.

On shore for the first time in a few weeks. Not sure if this beach is in an opening up state so I can get a beach bar or not, but still better than being on any cruise ship these days...

Uh oh, looks like my meta mojo has gone far, far away.
Or, maybe my swimming stroke has suffered after all the floundering around last week hopelessly fighting the current.

this one is nothing like last week's, keep drinking and see what comes up.
ok, perhaps not as well worded as it might have been.

That's not a spoiler, it's a rehash of the title and the pointer.

Al put Utica in his most recent contribution to the metas, nicely done.

Onshore for the first time in a few weeks, and submitted the solution by email for the first time ever. The WSJ system problems meant I had to print out the puzzle and do it in pen, the first time I've done a puzzle on paper in a couple of years! I had forgotten how quick it can be to do it that way - mainly because I can see all the clues at once - but my handwriting is still atrocious

You are some kind of genius. I have gone down so many rabbit holes, day one is closing, I’m gonna sleep on it, and you did both grid and meta in half an hour. Respect.

Sam and I are on shore. She solved the meta before I could finish writing down the theme entries on my paper.

Thanks, but it's more luck than brains... sometimes the first rabbit is the right one. You'll get it...yourpalsal wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 2:51 amYou are some kind of genius. Well - I’m usually pretty quick with the grid (under 15 minutes 75% of the time) and start it most days at 4 on the dot - yet usually you are done with the grid and meta before I finish the grid so I think that says something about brains.

I wish. The WSJ AI did; in December, there was an article (https://www.wsj.com/articles/whats-in-a ... c773f5dbe2) about having its hedcuts done by AI instead of hand that allowed readers to make their own.Bob cruise director wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 8:51 pm

Not that I harbor a grudge when the constructor outwits me ...
[Gaffney lurks in the shadows]
[Shane leans against the bar]
"So you're Matt Gaffney"
[Gaffney: Arctic-cold, unblinking, killer eyes]
"What's that mean to you, Shane?"
"I've heard of you"
"What have you heard, Shane?"
[Shane straightens up, fingertips brushing the hand-tooled leather that holds his Montblanc and cartridges of ink]
"I heard you're a low down Yankee liar"
[Gaffney sneers and slowly reaches into his black leather messenger bag, pulling out a new meta and sliding it softly across the table]
"Prove it"
