Gained in Translation

#1

Post by DrTom »

Well, this Monday it is my distinct pleasure to be the MMM creator. This puzzle was actually inspired by several others but does not follow their mechanisms (so in case you were going to look, go ahead, it won't help). I do not think this one is particularly difficult, I don't really do "hard" Metas (its a talent thing not a lack of desire to be a bit more challenging). At any rate I'd give this at best a 2 star or maybe 1.5, but hey if it starts your week off with a win then more's the better.

The title is Gained in Translation and the prompt is:

The meta answer is a Paris attraction that has been a center for training and art since the 1900s

If there is any subterfuge it is minor, but I hope clever.

So my merry band of Muggles, move madly midst my meta mechanism (has NOTHING to do with the solve, I just liked the alliteration ;))

PM me with your solutions or for assistance if needed.

There will be Thursday nudges if there is anyone struggling (which I doubt) and I'll keep a leaderboard.

Submitted... we'll see about solved soon enough.

This was clever and fun.
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

Still working the grid. But have to comment on 59A. We watched "Elf" this weekend for the 100th time (or so) and this particular scene comes to mind. My wife still cringes.

I also enjoyed the twisted clueing. I’d say Dr Tom is the best at bad puns and medical terms I never knew I needed to know. I’ve submitted and feel confident enough to backflip off the sofa. And we are confirmed.

Got the grid and am working on the meta

What I want to know is how old is the youngest person who got 59A without either the down words or having to look it up

The doctor is dating himself (and me)

Well they probably looked at it and let it sit overnight?

Oh, and a correction please, my wife says I am specifically NOT allowed to date!!

What? There's something to look up or to know? I just figured the down answer made that a reasonable answer as chewing gum would lose flavor there (and revolting gum-chewers do place there gum in revolting places). Is that actually supposed to be a reference to something?

(says a guy old enough to know what the Dick van Dyke show is [but not old enough to have ever watched it out of syndicate]).

EDIT: Well, apparently it's the same age as the Barbie Doll.

Hey, gentlemen, I knew 59A sans Google! My father used to sing that song and my mother would chime in with "Mairzy Doats"!
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

The good doctor graciously took me off the couch even though I had one part not quite right. I too enjoyed the cluing, and I did NOT get 59 across without the downs!
