Hmm. Since I restarted playing in non-official hard mode six days ago my scores have been: 2;3;3;3;5;3.

I think I'll stick with it (hard mode) out to three guesses.

I'm still not going to go "official" hard mode though. I think it is really fun around guess four, when necessary, to lay out all the possibilities I can think of and try to find a non-hard mode word or words that can eliminate all the wrong answers in one or two steps. (Of course, I occasionally get surprised by the results when I've overlooked a possibility or two. )
