During last evening's ZOOM I learned that a few of you are still puzzling over this one, so here are some Nudges:

Search the grid for entries that become "new" things when the word "NEW" is placed ahead of them.

Are there any other clues that fit these "new" things?

The first letters of the original answers to the alternate clues spell another word that can also have a "new" beginning.

Nudge 1: Yes, I figured so
Nudge 2: No! And I specifically looked for them! ..... okay, time to look again
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

Since I’m late to start this week and feeling a bit lazy I used the nudges. Confirmed on Crosshare that I am off the sofa :-) great puzzle!

Aw, Geez...... I get it!

Even knowing what I had to do I really had a hard time seeing it. (Maybe if I had spent my teenage years in more worthwhile pursuits rather than doing homework and helping my mother I would have had an easier time of this).

(Also reading in XXXXXXX rather than XXXXXXXX gets me every time).

A good puzzle... but I'd like it even more if I weren't such a moron. I trust next time you will fix it so that I'm not a moron.)

I made my usual mistake and thus couldn't get off the couch till violently shoved. The puzzle was far more clever than me.

OK, I think I finally got it (with the hints) - waiting for confirmation. Great debut and thank you for the puzzle, @Cap'n Rick

I hope I’m correct - otherwise I’ve been skunked this week so far. Hoping for better luck tomorrow!

Edit: confirmed on Crosshare - I forgot it was out there. Off the couch/de-skunked for the week

This is kind of weird.

I made a guess which Crosshare said was correct.

I emailed the Capt and he said he had trouble with Crosshare and my answer was wrong.

So I then went back today and got another answer which was confirmed. Pretty sure this answer is right.

Did not use the nudges and have not looked at them.

Maybe I will to see if they confirm.
