MEOW #119: The Ultimate Challenge

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

The lion is out of the bag chez moi, and we're being a bit cautious. As Woody Allen said, "The lion shall lie down with the lamb, but the lamb won't get much sleep."

It turns out that what I thought was the first step was actually the answer.

The only thing I'm sure of is that @madhatter5 had a lot of fun writing these clues; I keep rereading them and giggling at different ones :-) 52A is never not funny.

Hey everyone! Just thought that those of you struggling with this meta could do with a tiny break. So here's a bonus MOAT meta for you! https://crosshare.org/crosswords/QCouJ6 ... space-meta
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

OK, so the cat left the bag and got stuck in the vacuum cleaner hose, but eventually figured it out.

Well, at least I could solve one puzzle on this forum!

Out of the bag. Thanks for the puzzle, madhatter! And also to MMe and Benchen, you all have inspired me to share my own, too.

@MMe, I know what's going on and almost have it! What I think the last step is isn't clicking, as of yet.

@madhatter5, You're not lion! (Or maybe you are.)

@benchen71, thanks for the reprieve, haha.

Kind of a weird feeling to give up and say I won't.

Well, the 4x 4s are both beyond me. Somethings going to crack with Josh's though (I'll take hints) but it'll probably be my head.
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

5 for 5, so I'd be happy to share the wealth.

Okay... for some reason everyone else is doing these and I've never been able to resist peer pressure.

With a slight nudge, I did decipher Josh's meta. As Chris said, it was....interesting.
I will consider the cat freed.
