My rabbit hole: for the starred clues, provide a different answer that fits.
1A Deck material : CARD
20A Baked Alaska layer : ICE CREAM
35A Mock : ?
47A Touched tenderly : ?
60A Garamond... : TYPE
That only led to CIVET (and a few uncommon words), which didn't seem to have anything to do with Halloween.

"I hope no one else saw the original post and got unwillingly spoilered as a result"
I saw it. It didn't mean a thing to me as far as solving.
Whoosh! Right over my head.
Question: Is a boomerang a SPEAR?

No, but boomerangs can be used as weapons.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Why is the 46D Toys for Tots answer TYPO? How do the two correlate?
Congratulations to all solvers!

If you’re typing the word TOTS and hit the Y instead of the second T, you’ve created a TYPO.

MERINGUE was the entry point for me thanks to those Aboriginal Australians and Ogden Nash.
When I was a child, my parents had a record of The Carnival of Animals by the French composer Saint-Saens – a series of pieces each representing an animal, sort of like Peter and the Wolf. For this recording, Columbia Recods had gotten Nash to write poems for each animal. On the record, Noel Coward recites the poem, then the orchestra plays the corresponding piece. The one for the Kangaroo is this:
The kangaroo can jump incredible
He has to jump, because he’s edible.
I could not eat a kangaroo,
But many fine Australians do.
Those with cookbooks as well as boomerangs
Prefer him in tasty kangaroo meringues.

I got into a rabbit hole that I couldn’t get out of.
I thought “Start in Fear” alluded to the word “fear” and its middle letters. There are 4 words in the grid with the “ea” string, like in the inside of “fear”: teak, onea, tease, spear. They appear in that order, and the first letters spell “tots.” I know Mike loves to use the clues for his metas, and I thought the “Toys for Tots” clue at 46-down was odd, so I tried to make that clue the central point of the meta, but I couldn’t pull it off. Thus, the end of a 6 week streak for me. Will start anew this week. Congrats to the solvers!

Once again, I’m in awe of the solvers. I went down the ice cream route. Also tried adding some form of letters from Start and Fear to the start of the starred clues and answers. But nothing. Particularly as Meringue and Caressed were proving stubborn. Great job by the solvers and a great meta.

Hmmmm, that’s a very good question! I think it may well be….depending on how many words fit the category ( eg “5 letter words relating to Halloween) . What say the moderators?Miki wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 1:01 am I didn't want to make a big deal before the answer was posted, but I would like to pose a question:

If the clue is a 5 letter Halloween related word, and people who post that they solved it use 5- letter Halloween related words like trick or treat, ghost, ghoul, etc. Is that a spoiler or an anti-spoiler ( spoiler by elimination)?

Never saw it. This is one of the type my brain can't process. Congrats to the solvers!

Looks like we missed posts that mentioned meta-related words pre-deadline. Please report questionable posts that miss moderators' attentions, please. Thank you @Miki & @Ergcat for raising the point!Ergcat wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 7:32 amHmmmm, that’s a very good question! I was all set to post that “finding this trick was a real treat” when I thought of that and changed my onshore post.Miki wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 1:01 am I didn't want to make a big deal before the answer was posted, but I would like to pose a question:

If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.
(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)
