Boy I am stuck on this one! It seems like it should be right in front of me but the letters are square pegs in round holes this time!! Would anyone be able to offer a small nudge in this trying time?

First time posting, but I’ve been lurking for quite a while. My wife and I are both stuck and could use a nudge.

Given that I also had a EAVESDROP I think that's the right answer.

They seem to have some trouble with their schedule around the holidays. That's understandable, I do too.

So, I did get to shore, but even looking at the solution posted above, I still don't see why my two 'pesky letters' work. I don't get why 'police' matches 'emts' or 'justice' matches 'education' the way that the other ice words do. My brain needs to be more pliable!

They're alterative answers to the clues, not alternative words for the answers.

Thus, both Education and Justice are cabinet departments. Both police and EMTs respond to life-threatening situations.

There was a similar mechanism in the July 23, 2021 puzzle, “Two For One.”

We feel like we've been at sea so long it has become a Waterworld for us so we'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a good end of year and a Merry Christmas to those who are celebrating.

I've never seen "Chicago Hope" but assumed there were POLICE hanging out with ERDOCs. EMTS makes much more sense.
