Haven't started the puzzle yet (waiting for Friday night traditional solving session with the kids). So not reporting on ship or shore yet. But thought the bird lovers here might appreciate this.

My wife and I have been hearing a strange, rising-hiss sound at night here at our Pocono Mountain cottage. I figured it was some sort of owl, but couldn't find the exact sound online. Then, this afternoon, I heard it again. And what should swoop up to a tree limb on the side of the driveway...?

I got some video that includes the hissing sound. But the file size is huge.

He's been hanging around for hours. Hope he stays. Mice are an inevitable problem here. I can live with the weird sound at night.

Barred owl I believe. Very haunting call.

Thanks for the tip! And yes, that's what it is. However, when I played the sounds I found on the web, I discovered that the very large owl we saw here is actually a juvenile, which has a very different sound than the adult. (Last one on the list of sound samples on the link.) "Haunting" is an appropriate word to describe what we hear.

As I sit here on my deck, I can hear the adult call on one side of the house with the juvenile answering from the other.

Where are all those people who post inadvertent spoilers when the moderators aren't looking? Still on the boat.

Well..... If you have any suggestions on how to make it too easy, I'm all ears.

So, yeah, I'm making it too hard, ya got a problem with that....

So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

Ashore! Very clever puzzle. I stumbled onto the solution not thinking it would lead anywhere but there it was.
I’d love a riesling but will have to settle for Trader Joe’s red blend which is actually quite good!

Late start due to my son's baseball game. Thought I had tried the ultimately successful approach from the get-go, but I guess I hadn't. Figured it out in the end.

Was glad to see 29D in the grid. My favorite baseball player when I was young.

Ashore -- much to my amazement since the only thing I know about astronomy is that I'm a Pisces (he said, alluding to the puzzle of two weeks ago).
