It's not that well known. Probably hit its height of popularity in the 60s and 70s. (Good decade for childrens fantasy-- heavy on the personal growth but with real magic and adventure to balance). It's probably best known now for the first two books being a rather bad Disney adaptation in the 80s. I recommend it (the series, not the Disney Adaptation) but with a slight caveat that the female character although being brave, resourceful, and [in her way] intelligent, is predominately flighty in a very late 50s early 60s sort of way.

Actually I think today the author now might be more well known for his stand alone book "Time Cat" and a time traveling cat (a cat's nine lives are not consecutive... they are lived in simultaneously in different eras in the past [and the author, being more literary than analytical, made a "fence post" error of giving the cat a 10th/0th (non)life in present day)

This was frustrating. I was proud for knowing (actually knowing not educated guessing) the first question. But then my first thoughts on the next two were correct but I talked myself out of them.
