"Horror Movie Trope" by benchen71
Welcome to...
benchen71's Metas on a Tuesday (MOAT)
Can you storm the castle by getting across the MOAT? To mark the occasion that occurs at the end of October, I present this meta puzzle. The answer to the meta is a Chvrches song.
PM me with your submissions or submit on Crosshare. Either way, I'll compile a list of those who successfully solve the meta.

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Solved and confirmed on crosshare.org - good puzzle, Ben, thank you! There was a ton of stuff I didn’t know in the puzzle (including the Chvrches) but it was still solvable with the crosses

I have heard of horror films. I may have even seen one once (does "Carrie" count?). But I'm not familiar with their tropes, and I'd never heard of Chvrches. No doubt some solvers were right there with Benchen71 and didn't need Google at all to spot the overlap. I had to Google both categories.

I have crossed the MOAT. Not confirmed probably due to the time difference. I needed Google for Chvrch info but not for the horror films.
And confirmed. Forgot about Crosshare. Maybe good because my first answer was wrong. I was able to edit before benchen71 woke up in the Land Down Under.

Submitted and confirmed by Crosshare. Clever idea but did require googling Chvrches.
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.
My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

Solved and confirmed via Crosshare. I submitted an incorrect entry at first, but found the much more fitting answer afterwards.
Definitely encountered some new words in the fill. Difficult for me, and had to google a few things, but didn't detract from the solve experience.
Thanks for the puzzle, Ben!

The castle is mine!
Solved with Mr. G’s help. Though, amazingly, I am familiar with Chvrches. Keep in mind that I’m one whose musical interests essentially ended with the Superfly soundtrack. (All downhill from there.) In summer 2019, Lynne and I vacationed briefly in Quebec City (beautiful!). They were having their huge summer music fest. We climbed a hill to get a sense, from a great distance, of what the excitement was all about. We could see from the large screen (but not really from the stage; too far away) that a band called Chvrches was playing. Thinking, naturally, at first, that the v was a typo. Later, telling of this to our younger son, who we thought might be interested in Quebec’s music fest, he said, “Oh, yeah, Chvrches, they’re good.” So there you have my boring story of why this old fogey knows of the band Chvrches.

Tough grid areas for me. But, hey, it’s good to learn while having fun!

Carrie counts, and is also the one and only horror movie I have seen.Bird Lives wrote: ↑Tue Oct 26, 2021 1:39 pm I have heard of horror films. I may have even seen one once (does "Carrie" count?). Got it! Hadn’t heard the band, the song, or the trope, but that’s what makes these fun.

Well I solved it, but not before trying WAY too many times because there are at least 7 Chvches songs that will fit the answers and category quite well. I see why the answer is the answer but I could make a case for any of the choices I made that did not answer correctly.
