Just figured it out after being stuck. Fill in the grid based on the clues without considering the mirror instructions, then apply the mirror instructions once the grid is complete.

Also, I had to Google to read up about the first answer in Row 10 to remind me of the relevance to mirrors.

It took me several tries to reveal the answer.

I have the entire grid filled and no idea what to do after that.

I do the variety puzzles on paper, and I do not get my weekend WSJ until the Saturday afternoon mail. After finishing grinding through the grid a moment ago, I got the answer in fairly short order. But the mirror instructions still would not have led me to the solution. Maybe I "back solved" the instructions without knowing it. At any rate, I understand the "What do I do next?" feeling.

Terrible instructions. We solved the whole puzzle and still have no idea what we are even looking for...

I keep thinking there's another step, but the letters I got from the reflections instructions don't take me any further. I guess it's not as meta as I want to make it :)

Looks like I’ll be waiting till the answer is published.

Patrick Berry puzzles are generally my favorite.

The best advice I've seen is to circle or highlight the letters that weren't reflected.

Nothing!

Strange, because I was the 10th person to report getting CLOWN for the Friday puzzle...

The mirror reflects the closest letter that it sees. The Row 10 answer explains why that letter is sometimes different than expected from the grid entries.

Yep, Miki, it didn't seem to make any sense for me either because for the longest time I was trying to read from the perspective of the mirror instead of the "natural" order (i.e. from the solver's perspective).

Never saw the complete answer. Just the "first" reflection and that was just a bunch of letters. Had to see the solution at WSJ.

I was speaking to a friend yesterday while walking the dog. Even though we finally solved this puzzle, we were still discussing how the instructions could have been written in a clearer way.
