"First Christmas" by benchen71

Can you storm the castle by getting across the MOAT? A weekly meta crossword constructed by forum member Ben (aka benchen71). These metas range from relatively easy to more challenging, depending on how many Australianisms he puts in them! Puzzles are posted in a new thread every Tuesday, with nudges appearing on Saturdays, and the solution coming out on Mondays. (At least, that's the plan. Given he lives in Australia, and they are so far ahead of the US time-zone-wise, things may get posted early!)

Welcome to...

benchen71's Metas on a Tuesday (MOAT)

Can you storm the castle by getting across the MOAT? Wishing you a very merry Christmas! I've attempted some gentle myth-busting in this grid. If you're interested in reading more, check out https://www.psephizo.com/biblical-studi ... le-honest/ for a good presentation of the evidence; and I've also spoken about this in a recent YouTube video. The answer to the meta is suggested by the grid.

PM me with your submissions or submit on Crosshare. Either way, I'll compile a list of those who successfully solve the meta.

Unconfirmed, but I’m considering the castle stormed…unless a grinch arrives to ruin Christmas. Cheers, all, and thanks, Ben!

I'm possibly across the moat, but I may just be wading around with the alligators (who are sluggish this time of year in my hemisphere).

Update: Alligators it is.

Well, haven't crossed the MOAT as my road-map is spotty and I'm not sure if there is a castle in the general area. I see a meadow of flowers and a reference to a castle existing but... can't see any MOAT to cross.
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

I'm doing the nudges a day early so that I don't have to remember to do it on Christmas day!

1. Don't overthink it; it's more of an observational thing!

2. Surely the presence of SYRINX / XRAYS and RAZE / ZONE in the grid is a bit of a giveaway... ;)

Merry Christmas, y'all!

I took yet another look at it this morning, and made it across the moat rather unexpectedly.
Clever puzzle. Merry Christmas to all.

I hate to admit it but I needed the spoilers. There is really no excuse for me not getting this one outright which I will explain after the reveal if I remember to do so.
