MEOW #112: Slide, You Blockhead! Slide!
What's this? A meta puzzle involving baseball constructed by an Australian? Has the world turned upside-down?!? Actually, we do have baseball Down Under. But it isn't massively popular, and I really don't know much about the sport. When it crops up in US-centric metas I usually shudder and hope against hope that I'll be able to solve the darn thing. Well, let's see if I did my homework. The answer to the meta is a 7-letter word which is an important facet of the game of baseball.
The easiest way to submit is on Crosshare (and you get instant feedback and unlimited attempts!) But you can also PM me with your submission. Either way, I'll compile a list of those who successfully solve the meta.

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta! ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

I just noticed a non-meta-related error. The clue for 59D should be "What ft can be combined into". ![Embarrassed ](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)
(I changed it on Crosshare but I won't bother fixing the puz or pdf files.)

The cat has slid out of the bag. Now he needs a bath to get that streak of dirt off. Cute puzzle!

Hah! I bet when that Australian tries, he'll know more about it than I do.
Well, let's see.... here goes.
EDIT: Well, you knew one more term than I did (53D).
So... to backsolve... hm......

So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.
My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

Isn’t it about time for Snoopy in Cooperstown?
What’s wrong with those baseball writers?
Cat-free bag!
Fun. Thanks, Ben!

Well, we're nearly 24 hours in and the following solvers have made their way home:
DrTom (tester)
Schmeel
Cindy Heisler
boharr
Meg
Hector
ChrisCross
Mwoychick
ChrisKochmanski
woozy
Cindy Weatherman
Tyrpmom
Laura M
Darth
That's only 14, so this is proving harder than I expected. By the way, if you are solving using the provided PUZ or PDF, I have made two changes to clues. One was an error; the other was a distraction away from the meta mechanism. The changed clues are as follows:
51D Repair a lawn
59D What ft can be combined into
I'm sure you can deduce which was which!

A solve is a solve! (The comments on Crosshare will point you in the direction of the mechanism, if you can't wait for the answer reveal.)

Phew! finally got it with the 51D correction, tho being a Nats fan it’s not easy to wrap your brain around baseball any which way!

Got it with considerable assistance. More like a YEOW! for me. I am unable to sign in to Crosshare though.
