MEOW #181 Day Trip

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

MEOW #181 Day Trip

#1

Post by DrTom »

Who doesn't enjoy an outing? This may end up being a trip down memory lane, and hopefully not the trip from hell. You won't find the answer in a Rick Steeves guidebook, that's for sure.

I'm posting early because I have an early Doctor's appointment tomorrow (from experience I know that the earlier in the day it is the more likely it is to be on time since the DOc's day has not exploded by then) so I cannot do my "posting at 1 or 2 AM" thing.

I'd say this was a solid Persian because you may have trouble seeing my metanism at first.

Kitten

Calico

PERSIAN

Puma

Lion

My testers on this were a fine group; @Al Sisti , @hcbirker and @rjy , all of who probably felt they needed a day trip after to relax.

Nudges will be Friday of course and I am always available by PM before that.

Apparently, the cat is free! Now to work out how it got out...
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta! :D

Cat went on a trip somewhere...
I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.

🐱 is out and packing ... Seems he's.taking catnip and his favorite mouse toy and his pajamas, so maybe going on an overnight adventure! 😆 Thanks, Tom.

Obviously one cool cat!

Thank you from taking away from vacation time to solve it Mike!

Worth the little side-trip on the way through my day! Cat and I are roaming freely.

Solved in mid-air, embarking on a trip of my own! Saw the metanism almost immediately, but not fully, so only got a quarter of the way there. A quick (cat)nap and it jumped out. Very amusing!

Nudge Friday:

Did 6D give you the feeling I was getting at something? Because I was.

"...a word is too long" what does that usually mean in the meta world?

Knowing that most constructors try to have their theme answers in a symmetric pattern does that help you any?

36A is more than a cultural hero from my ill-spent days as a college student in the 60's, he is not just an icon, he's an Easter Egg.

Many people say their "intro" to the path home was the Vail clue.

Happy Releasing!

Tom

Needed the shove to see the mechanism, even though I guessed the answer before starting the puzzle.  Thanks.
