MEOW #97: Echo Location

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

MEOW #97: Echo Location

Ahoy Muggles!

I'm very pleased to be back on MEOW again today after the recently-formed "clowder" extended an invitation. I echo @benchen71's sentiments that it's great having a space where you don't have to worry about all those pesky crossword and meta rules. In fact, I think I broke several of them in today's puzzle. (Nah, I'm just "Joshin'"!) :D

I'd like to thank @whimsy, @MarkWoychick, and @boharr for testing help, and a special thank you to @DrTom who, while testing a different puzzle, provided the inspiration for this one. He also came up with some witty wording for one of the clues (you'll know which one).

The meta answer is a very relaxing place.

Lynx:

Echo Location - Crosshare

Echo Location - PUZ

Echo Location - PDF

Echo Location - spreadsheet

Difficulty:(Adjusted)

Kitten
Calico
Persian
Puma
Lion

Nudges are here.
Solution is here.

Good luck!

Fun, and the perfect level for this morning after MGWCC

Dr Tom's clue has an extra step but it's delightful

What the Good Captain didn’t mention is that it took him less than a day to move from his original puzzle to this one - I mean we are talking Pandora Will speed here!

A very nice puzzle in record time!

Well, perhaps this kitty's fangs are longer than I thought. Just might have to kick it up a notch. :D

I know what I want the mechanism to be.... but it isn't.

In frustration, I made up a puzzle with the mechanism I wanted it to be. But I suppose I should sit down and try to figure out what I'm missing.

Day 1 - Apparently this puzzle is playing harder than I had expected. Only 15 Muggles' cats (including 4 tester solvers) are out of their bags:

DrTom (TS)
Whimsy (TS)
Boharr (TS)
MarkWoychick (TS)
Hector
Bird Lives
dudeski
ChrisKochmanski
Cindy Weatherman
Meg
DIS
Gutman
Sharkicicles
Bbaack
Tom Wilson

Since I'd prefer to see a lot more happy solvers, I'll throw out an early nudge to help folks get started.

The answer to @DrTom's clever clue at 20A, in addition to being humorous, is also a hint to the mechanism. Good luck!

Well, I was certainly assuming it'd was supposed to be harder.

free and roaming… enjoyed this one, despite being tripped up by one (defensible, but wrong) switcheroo. (Thanks for the assist, @Cap’n Rick!)

The bag was open for two days but the cat did not leave. The answer was right there on my solving sheet. I did not know it was a thing.

Loved the mechanism but not knowing I had the answer prevented an aha moment.

The cat is free, thanks to a helpful nudge.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Day 2 - Eleven more Muggles' bags are catless:

woozy
tyrpmom
Darth
HeadinHome
Schmeel
markhr
Tom.Runner
THC
lbray53
Carolyn
benchen71

This brings our solver total to 26. I think I'll toss out another nudge to see if we can pick up the pace a little bit.

Think "echo" = "repeat', and look for entries that can be repeated.

Finally wrestled that cat out with the help of some remedial nudges. A fantastic meta - thanks, Rick!
