"Toe the Line" by Wendy Walker
Welcome to this week's Sunday Summer Substitute! I don't want to tell you too much about its origin right now, as that would provide a big hint. Thanks to @Abide for the title and a little reworking, and @Joe Ross for his technical expertise. I hope you have fun with it -- just don't get carried away! Nudges will appear early this afternoon. Deadline is Saturday morning.

The meta is a summer hazard? So not 5A then.
Hmm... must be missing something

As they said in MASH "Ah Bach"
It took longer than is should have but with the rain, there is nothing else to do. And for some reason they moved the golf up several hours and it is not on TV.
And the earworm for today (as it may be replaced by an earworm in the MMM

Sssolved sssans nudges. Given what we've just been through, I was looking for a Tennessee Williams title: "Summer and Smoke."

Thought I’d solved, but answer incorrect. What?? It was so cute!
Then I shut my eyes for just a quick Sunday nap. Two HOURS later, dog’s barking at the chickens woke me up. (Gotta love Sundays)
Saw the correct answer almost immediately upon emerging from Sunday coma, submitted, and then read the comment board about nudges. What nudges??
All that to say, did not use the nudges.
This was easy like Sunday morning until it wasn’t, but still a fun way to spend a hot, slow July afternoon.
Sssuper job!

I wonder if I did the same thing as @HeadinHome Saw something that suggested a cute answer but was wrong. Then went off on an entirely different tangent. Then circled back to my original observation but applied it correctly this time.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.
(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Ssolved with the last nudge (first three were confirmatory), which extracted me from my rabbit hole and opened my mind to finding the mechanism.
