Put it All Together

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Put It All Together Banner2.jpg

When the Captain asked me for a Smooth Sailing Sunday Solve (wait is that too many S's?) I could not resist. What I had to resist is trying to Tom this darn thing up. It is VERY hard to do what the Captain does; make a fun, interesting, challenging but not mind-bending puzzle with solid fill. Truthfully if he had not helped me I probably would not have managed.

I'm hoping this is just right for this Sunday and doesn't keep you tied up trying to determine (1) what I am getting at (2) WHY Cap'n Rick even asked me in the first place.

There are a few nudges in case you need them, but I'd bet most do not.

The meta answer is 7 letters long

Cap insisted that it be symmetric

The title was originally "Put Them All Together" but we though that might tip it too much

What is the publication day - not the date, the day

I want to extend a thanks to @boharr who graciously tested and gave some great feedback on making the puzzle better.

NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

In 10A did you mean "of" instead of "or'?

Yep, that should say "Type of enemy". That one's on me. :D

Sssolved! Took a bit too see what I needed to see, but a nice moment when I did! :D
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Actually it is equally on me. I saw that when getting ready to post and overlooked that the word would need an E to make it fit both.

Got it without nudges. But I have to confess I can't make any sense out of the first three nudges. (And isn't nudge 1 just plain wrong?)

Is there more to the mechanism I just don't get?

Got it with the nudges, as I was not close to being on the correct wavelength. Fun stuff though, thanks. Appreciate the shout-out at 56D

Sssolved! The corrected nudge#1 confirmed my guess, and then I saw that the guess was confirmed another way also.

Sssolved, but needed the correction to nudge 1. Total guess, but now I see the mechanism. Very clever. Thanks for the puzzle!
