Nice to see a guest appearance by our old friends Cox and Rathvon. Unfortunately, they are repeating an old theme from one of their prior puzzles. Still fun and not much of a strain.
Apologies—the C&R puzzle came up for me when I googled WSJ Variety Puzzle. I guessed it was familiar because I had done it once before. Oh well, another free solve.

I figured that's what happened... my web search engine often does the same thing to me with WSJ puzzles. I'm impressed that you remembered it! It was still tricky for me, even though I knew I must have solved it earlier.
